How Did Kitchens Seem In 1900?

Since electricity was not yet widely available, natural light was mostly used in kitchens in 1900. To maximise the quantity of daylight entering the area, large windows were typical. Kitchens were lighted at night by oil or gas lamps, which made visibility difficult.
Plumbing and water supply were also very different in those days. The single tap or water pump seen in most kitchens was usually situated next to the washbasin. Typically, hot water was acquired by heating it on the stove in a different container. This meant that, in contrast to today’s technological comforts, duties like dishwashing needed more time and effort. Kitchen design around 1900 was straightforward and practical. Neutral-colored paint was frequently used on the walls, while hardwood or linoleum were used for flooring. Since the kitchen was primarily used as an office, functionality was prioritised over aesthetics.
